CAMP VICTORY, Iraq – Nearly 150 miles away from the farthest reaches of his command, Maj. Gen. Michael Oates, Multinational Division – Center and 10th Mountain Division (LI) commander, traveled to Kirkuk and Forward Operating Base Warrior to pay tribute to 1st Brigade Combat Team.The Warrior Brigade completed a transition of responsibility to 18th Engineer Brigade on Thursday after more than a year of support for Operation Iraqi Freedom.“I am very proud Maj. Gen. Oates is here with us as well,” said Oates’ counterpart at MND-North, Maj. Gen. Mark Hertling (who also commands 1st Armored Division), to the gathered crowd.
“I wanted him to know the kinds of things his Soldiers have done. “I say ‘his Soldiers’ with a little bit of pain,” he continued, “as we hate to give them back.”
Hertling spoke to the crowd about the impact Warrior Brigade had in stabilizing security and partnering with Iraqi Security Forces in Kirkuk Province.
He highlighted their accomplishments, noting that Kirkuk had seen better security, better economic prospects for residents, a better-trained and more functional ISF, as well as a close relationship with U.S. State Department counterparts, which had not been the case before 1st BCT’s deployment.Col. David Paschal, 1st BCT commander, thanked colleagues of the brigade who helped them throughout their deployment, highlighting contributions of the Provincial Reconstruction Team and 506th Air Expeditionary Group, as well as significant strides that had been made by their Iraqi partners in Kirkuk.“I am truly honored to be among you,” he said, before transitioning into some of the highlights of the brigade’s tour. “We worked alongside the Iraqi Army and Iraqi Police to reduce violence in the province by 70 percent. The IA continues to grow in capabilities and capacity.”Leaders also discussed 1st BCT’s involvement in significant economic developments, infrastructure improvements and improved stability in Kirkuk Province.
“I remain confident that the best days of the Kirkuk Province lie ahead,” Paschal added.
He also called for a moment of silence for the 15 Warrior Brigade Soldiers who gave their lives in support of an improved Iraq, as well as numerous Iraqi martyrs who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country’s future.Col. Matthew Russell, 18th Engineer Brigade commander, thanked the leadership and staff of 1st BCT for a smooth, easy transition. He said he hoped his unit was able to build off the numerous successes that 1st BCT Soldiers accomplished during their tour of duty in Iraq.

And in towns and villages on both continents, there are still men and women who talk of the day when the Americans arrived to free them from tyranny.

We have had some delays ---

Impatient waiting---

At times I start to doubt the wisdom of God's timing or the goodness of his guidance.

I know that God's care over me and my loved ones is something far greater than i can conceive but walking it out is a hard road at times.

"Are you waiting for something? I mean really waiting with deep longing in your soul for something beyond your control? Are you waiting for God to answer? If so, you are in a good (though hard) place.
God highly values the fruit produced in the soul that learns to wait patiently for him. So he takes pains to cultivate it in us. "

On a crisp October morning, our local newspaper featured a stunning photo of sun-drenched aspen trees whose leaves had turned autumn gold. The caption read: FOR A LIMITED TIME ONLY. The irresistible invitation to take a drive through the mountains to savor the brilliant colors conveyed the urgency of doing it quickly. Autumn leaves that are golden today are often gone tomorrow.
Our opportunities to obey God’s promptings are also fleeting. James warned against an arrogance that assumes endless days will be available to carry out our good intentions. “You do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. . . . Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin” (4:14,17).
Is there an act of kindness or encouragement that God has urged you to do for someone in His name? How long has it been since that first prompting? With so many demands on our time, the urgent tasks demand our attention while the important things can be postponed. But a time will come when even the important can no longer be done.

1. Look back

The Lord reminded David what he had been, I took thee … from following the sheep (verse 7). David marvels that God has brought him from such a lowly position, Who am I, O Lord God? So Newton is astonished:

2. Look around

The Lord tells David, I have been with thee whithersoever thou hast walked, and cut off all thine enemies from before thee… (verse 8). David considers how the Lord hast brought me hitherto. So Newton reflects:

Through many dangers, toils and snares,
I have already come.
‘Tis grace has brought me safe thus far…

3. Look forward

The Lord promises that He will build thee a house… I will raise up thy seed… I will establish his throne for ever (verses 10-12). David is overawed that God has spoken of thy servant’s house for a great while to come… thou... hast promised this goodness unto thy servant (verses 17, 26). So Newton rejoices:

His word my hope secures;
He will my shield and portion be,
As long as life endures.
… God who called me here below,
Will be forever mine.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Bush said Thursday that history will look back at America's response to the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 and conclude that "we did not tire, we did not falter and we did not fail."
Bush marked the seventh anniversary of the deadliest attack on U.S. soil with a moment of silence at the White House at 8:46 a.m. EDT, precisely the moment when terrorists crashed a hijacked airliner into the World Trade Center in New York. A second plane struck the trade center shortly thereafter. Another was flown into the Pentagon and still another crashed in a field at Shanksville, Pa.
Bush also helped dedicate a memorial at the Pentagon honoring those who died there. He said the terrorists could not break the resolve of the U.S. armed forces.

He said that "since 9/11, our troops have taken the fight to the terrorists abroad so we do not have to face them here at home." Bush added: "Thanks to the brave men and women, and all those who work to keep us safe, there has not been another attack on our soil in 2,557 days."
The Pentagon Memorial, built at a cost of $22 million, contains 184 benches that will glow with light in the night, as well as trees and trickling water. Each bench is dedicated to an individual victim, and the structures are organized as a timeline of the victims' ages, moving from the youngest, 3-year-old Dana Falkenberg to the oldest, John D. Yamnicky, 71. Nearly 3,000 flags are arrayed in a Pentagon parking lot.

May the Holy Spirit give you to rest in Jesus this closing day of the month.

Warrior Family Members,

On behalf of the Warrior Combat Team I want to extend a special greeting on our Nation’s birthday. I know that this is a special time for families to gather and enjoy all that the summer season has to offer and a time to reflect on our great Nation. As I look at the Warrior Team, I share a deep pride knowing that the Soldiers and their families are the true patriots that make our nation great. As a Warrior Family, we live by a set values that defines us as an Army and as a nation. It is these values that comforts us during times of loss and give us the strength to pick each other up, so that we may continue our mission here in Iraq, so that others may live in freedom. It is this strength that preserves our way of life, builds a future of hope for others, and delivers victory over our enemies.

Many of you are perhaps wondering when we will return from this deployment. I am happy to report with great confidence that we’ll be home by mid November. I can speak for the entire Warrior team and let you know that we are all looking forward to that special day when we can reunite with our families. That day will be here soon; however, as we come to the final quarter of this deployment, I want to reinforce the importance of remaining focused on our mission. We are about to go through some important transitions as we begin setting the conditions for our transfer of authority ceremony in early November. These changes require us all to be alert with no room for complacency. I am charging all leaders to reinforce the standards that have kept us safe these many months.

We are all looking forward to the day we return to Fort Drum. We understand that our way home is through our mission accomplishment and that we must stay focused until that day comes. Your love and support will help us all get to that special day.

Jackson was truly a modest man. He would blush like a school-girl at a compliment. He was easily confused in the presence of strangers, especially if they were ladies. It is well known that the noisy demonstrations which the troops always made when they saw him were painfully embarrassing to him. This was usually attributed to his innate modesty; but that was not the sole cause. It had its origin in a higher source. In the last interview I ever had with him, he said: "The manner in which the press, the army, and the people seem to lean upon certain persons is positively frightful. They are forgetting God in the instruments he has chosen. It fills me with alarm." What a lesson is here to flatterers!

History: In 1814, about a week after the city of Washington had been badly burned, British troops moved up to the primary port at Baltimore Harbor in Maryland. Francis Scott Key visited the British fleet in the Harbor on September 13th to secure the release of Dr. William Beanes who had been captured during the Washington raid. The two were detained on the ship so as not to warn the Americans while the Royal Navy attempted to bombard Fort McHenry. At dawn on the 14th, Key noted that the huge American flag, which now hangs in the Smithsonian's American History Museum, was still waving and had not been removed in defeat. The sight inspired him to write a poem entitled Defense of Fort McHenry; later the poem was set to music that had been previously composed for another song by a Mr. Smith. The end result was the inspiring song now considered the national anthem of the United States of America. It was accepted as such by public demand for the next century or so, but became even more accepted as the national anthem during the World Series of Baseball in 1917 when it was sung in honor of the brave armed forces fighting in the Great War. The World Series performance moved everyone in attendance, and after that it was repeated for every game. Finally, on March 3, 1931, the American Congress proclaimed it as the national anthem, 116 years after it was first written.

The first Memorial Day, also called Decoration Day, was held on May 5, 1866, in Waterloo, New York, to honor soldiers who had fought and died in the Union Army during the American Civil War (1861–65). Businesses were closed and people decorated soldiers' graves and flew flags at half-staff. Declared a national holiday in 1971, Memorial Day now takes place on the last Monday in May, and marks the beginning of summer. Many communities have military parades, speeches, and picnics in honor of all those who served in the U.S. military forces.

Waterloo, NY claims to be the birthplace, and although officially declared so by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1966, it would seem that no one may truly lay claim to the tradition of remembering the War Dead by decorating their graves... from all accounts, it was a practice that sprung up in many, many individual towns both in the North and the South.
It doesn't matter who was first... what matters is that almost immediately the tradition was being practiced throughout the land and within short order it would become official. It is appropriate perhaps that the earliest accounts place the tradition in the loving and empty arms of the women left behind after the battle had ended.

The History of Memorial Day
Although many towns and villages in the North claim to be the birthplace of Memorial Day, the actual genesis appears to come from the women of the Confederacy who decorated the graves of their fallen husbands, sons, fathers and brothers. A Civil War hymn, published in 1867, is named "Kneel Where Our Loves are Sleeping" by Nella L. Sweet... its dedication simply reads..."To The Ladies of the South who are Decorating the Graves of the Confederate Dead".

Decoration Day
I. The 30th day of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet churchyard in the land. In this observance no form or ceremony is prescribed, but posts and comrades will in their own way arrange such fitting services and testimonials of respect as circumstances may permit.
We are organized, comrades, as our regulations tell us, for the purpose, among other things, "of preserving and strengthening those kind and fraternal feelings which have bound together the soldiers, sailors, and marines who united to suppress the late rebellion." FORT DRUM, N.Y. – There was a goodbye ceremony on Fort Drum, as the Army's Vice Chief of Staff and Governor Paterson join in the send off of more than 1,000 Fort Drum soldiers.The 1,100 men and women from the 10th Mountain Division Headquarters will be in Iraq for 15 months.In his remarks, Governor Paterson called attending the ceremony the highest privileged he's ever had.Chief of Staff General Richard Cody said he came to simply to say thank you to the troops.
"Six years later it is clear that over three hundred million Americans are protected from terrorism and extremism because of you, the strongest generation. Insurgents and pundits alike continue to proclaim that this army will bow and break. But they don't know this army, they don't know the iron will of the American soldier, they have never felt the core of the 10th Mountain Division," said General Cody.
The advance party has already deployed. The rest will leave in the first few days in May. The entire division headquarters should be in Iraq by the second week in May

Winds Of Love

TIKRIT, Iraq – In addition to assisting local Iraqi Security Forces and Coalition forces maintain security in their neighbors, Sons of Iraq members in northeastern Iraq are lending their support to local civic projects, such as the delivery and assembly of 100 desks with chairs, and school supplies for a rural school in Newafil Village outside the city of Kirkuk March 25.
“This was a great day for the children, parents, and the whole village to see the progress being made as a result of increased security in the area,” said Capt. Matt Lee, Company B commander, 2nd Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 10th Mountain Division.
Members of the Sons of Iraq are comprised of local citizens who protect their neighborhoods and its critical infrastructure under contract with CF and under the supervision of local Iraqi Security Forces.
“In partnership with the recently employed SOIs, we were able to install 100 new desks, chairs and furnish school supplies to a local school here successfully,” Lee said. “This is a great example of what can be accomplished when everyone works together to bring security and stability to their neighborhoods.”
The desks and chairs were donated by a local Iraqi contractor .

10th Mountain Brigade takes command in Iraq

A transfer of authority took place Oct. 10 in North Central Iraq between the redeploying 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, and its replacement, 1st BCT, 10th Mountain Division.
It was the first of several in the area of responsibility of Multi-National Division-North, which spans six provinces in an area about the size of Idaho.
The assumption-of-responsibility ceremony took place at Forward Operating Base Warrior in Kirkuk, about 150 miles north of Baghdad.
“Almost two years ago, my brigade witnessed the courage of the Iraqi people as they went to vote for the first time to determine their destiny,” 1st BCT commander Col. David Paschal said in a press release in reference to the brigade’s previous deployment.
“The courage demonstrated then fuels the commitment of my soldiers to the Iraqi people and our critical mission,” he said. “It was a distinct honor to be a part of that historical event and especially today, as we move forward to help the people of Iraq maintain their hard-earned freedom.”
During its rotation, the 3rd BCT completed more than 1,000 partnered combat operations with Iraqi security forces, conducted numerous civic and humanitarian projects and secured oil pipelines, according to the release.
“Our achievements echo Iraqi security forces’ achievements and would not have been possible without your commitment to stand against hatred and evil,” 3rd BCT commander Col.
