"Give me your Eyes" - Amazing Grace

(John Newton's Attic View)

Give me your eyes

(Brandon Heath)

"How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good tidings, who publishes peace, who brings good tidings of good, who publishes salvation, who says to Zion, "Your God reigns." Is 52:7

Giving the gospel away is one of the best ways of experiencing its power in your own life. The best way to taste the power of God for your own soul is to venture something on it. It's the great old truth of the Lord himself when he said, "He who loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it." The more ready we are to move with the gospel, the more life and power and joy and security we will know in the gospel.
In giving we will receive. In dying we will live. And in telling the gospel we will hear it again with O so much more depth and power and joy. (John Piper)

Amazing Grace: The Sermon Notes

John Newton based his hymn Amazing Grace on this passage in 1 Chronicles 17:16-17

16 Then King David went in and sat before the LORD, and he said: "Who am I, O LORD God, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? 17 And as if this were not enough in your sight, O God, you have spoken about the future of the house of your servant. You have looked on me as though I were the most exalted of men, O LORD God.

He took his 3 sermon points for the New Year from this passage of Scripture:

look back
look around
look forward

1. Look back

The Lord reminded David what he had been, I took thee … from following the sheep (verse 7). David marvels that God has brought him from such a lowly position, Who am I, O Lord God? So Newton is astonished:

Amazing grace…
that saved a wretch like me.

2. Look around

The Lord tells David, I have been with thee whithersoever thou hast walked, and cut off all thine enemies from before thee… (verse 8). David considers how the Lord hast brought me hitherto. So Newton reflects:

Through many dangers, toils and snares,
I have already come.
‘Tis grace has brought me safe thus far…

3. Look forward

The Lord promises that He will build thee a house… I will raise up thy seed… I will establish his throne for ever (verses 10-12). David is overawed that God has spoken of thy servant’s house for a great while to come… thou... hast promised this goodness unto thy servant (verses 17, 26). So Newton rejoices:

The Lord has promised good to me,
His word my hope secures;
He will my shield and portion be,
As long as life endures.
… God who called me here below,
Will be forever mine.

we remember 9.11

Bush marks Sept. 11 with moment of silence
By DEB RIECHMANN –
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Bush said Thursday that history will look back at America's response to the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 and conclude that "we did not tire, we did not falter and we did not fail."
Bush marked the seventh anniversary of the deadliest attack on U.S. soil with a moment of silence at the White House at 8:46 a.m. EDT, precisely the moment when terrorists crashed a hijacked airliner into the World Trade Center in New York. A second plane struck the trade center shortly thereafter. Another was flown into the Pentagon and still another crashed in a field at Shanksville, Pa.
Bush also helped dedicate a memorial at the Pentagon honoring those who died there. He said the terrorists could not break the resolve of the U.S. armed forces.

He said that "since 9/11, our troops have taken the fight to the terrorists abroad so we do not have to face them here at home." Bush added: "Thanks to the brave men and women, and all those who work to keep us safe, there has not been another attack on our soil in 2,557 days."
The Pentagon Memorial, built at a cost of $22 million, contains 184 benches that will glow with light in the night, as well as trees and trickling water. Each bench is dedicated to an individual victim, and the structures are organized as a timeline of the victims' ages, moving from the youngest, 3-year-old Dana Falkenberg to the oldest, John D. Yamnicky, 71. Nearly 3,000 flags are arrayed in a Pentagon parking lot.

Isaiah 51:5 On mine arm shall they trust.

Police cars patrol Canal Street on Sunday night as wind and rain from Gustav arrive in New Orleans, Louisiana.

thinking of you-
As Hurricane Gustav hits Louisiana - We pray for deliverance from this storm and safety for all in the area.

as i read in my notes on this page in Morning and Evening from the last few years- i'm reminder that there are those times that I'm so grateful for answers to prayer and also those times i have to rely on the everlasting arms of our Lord cause i don't yet fully understand as someday we will- 9/1/06. 9/3/07,9/1/08

Isaiah 51:5 "On mine arm shall they trust. "

In seasons of severe trial, the Christian has nothing on earth that he can trust to, and is therefore compelled to cast himself on his God alone. When his vessel is on its beam-ends, and no human deliverance can avail, he must simply and entirely trust himself to the providence and care of God.

Happy storm that wrecks a man on such a rock as this!

O blessed hurricane that drives the soul to God and God alone!

There is no getting at our God sometimes because of the multitude of our friends; but when a man is so poor, so friendless, so helpless that he has nowhere else to turn, he flies into his Father's arms, and is blessedly clasped therein! When he is burdened with troubles so pressing and so peculiar, that he cannot tell them to any but his God, he may be thankful for them; for he will learn more of his Lord then than at any other time. Oh, tempest-tossed believer, it is a happy trouble that drives thee to thy Father! Now that thou hast only thy God to trust to, see that thou puttest thy full confidence in Him. Dishonour not thy Lord and Master by unworthy doubts and fears; but be strong in faith, giving glory to God. Show the world that thy God is worth ten thousand worlds to thee. Show rich men how rich thou art in thy poverty when the Lord God is thy helper. Show the strong man how strong thou art in thy weakness when underneath thee are the everlasting arms.

Now is the time for feats of faith and valiant exploits. Be strong and very courageous, and the Lord thy God shall certainly, as surely as He built the heavens and the earth, glorify Himself in thy weakness, and magnify his might in the midst of thy distress. The grandeur of the arch of heaven would be spoiled if the sky were supported by a single visible column, and your faith would lose its glory if it rested on anything discernible by the carnal eye. May the Holy Spirit give you to rest in Jesus this closing day of the month.
